Disinfection in Healthcare Facilities

Disinfection in healthcare facilities reduces the microbial load on surfaces and eliminates harmful microorganisms in the air, limiting risks to patients.

The health emergency caused by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased collective awareness of how important it is to have environments disinfected and decontaminated, especially in healthcare facilities or doctor’s practices.

Healthcare environments, as well as medical clinics, are daily frequented by a very large number of people who come to this place mainly because they have health problems, need a visit and the right treatment.

This means that every patient can bring viruses, germs and bacteria into the environment and contaminate the air and the surfaces with which they come into contact.

Healthcare facilities are therefore places where the microbial load can be very high, bringing a high probability of infection and disease.

If not carefully disinfected, they can become source of infection. This explains why very high hygiene standards are required in medical practices in order to protect the health of patients and doctors.

Simply cleaning the rooms is not enough to guarantee a deep disinfection of the environment: it is therefore essential to plan specific treatment in order to guarantee the total disinfection of the rooms.

Furthermore, according to the provisions of the Italian Legislative Decree 81/08 (Consolidated Law on Health and Safety at Work), employers must guarantee healthy working environments for their employees (doctors, secretaries, receptionists, etc.).

Hygiene risks in healthcare facilities

In healthcare facilities, like – and more than – in other working contexts, the pathogens in the air and on surfaces can be numerous: viruses, bacteria, germs.

Moreover, the biological risk of healthcare facilities is considerably increased by the presence of dust, pollen deposited on surfaces and other pollutants from the external environment.
Viruses and bacteria multiply very quickly and can survive on surfaces for a very long period. This increases the probability of the formation of biofilm, which consists of a complex aggregation of microorganisms that adhere very strongly to surfaces and represent an obstacle to a 100% disinfection.
To eliminate biofilm, it is not always enough to use simple detergents used for the daily cleaning of rooms, but it is necessary to use biocidal substances.

In medical practices there are also several chemical risk: the chemicals used for daily cleaning can leave toxic residues in the environment, the so-called VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which over time can cause serious health problems.

Besides, in all healthcare facilities where surgical interventions are regularly performed and there are also inpatients, there is a risk of contracting nosocomial infections.

The disinfection and decontamination of the air and surfaces helps to reduce all these risks and protect the health of doctors, patients, nurses and all those attending the facility.

The benefits of disinfection in medical centres

Greater attention to the hygiene of healthcare facilities, medical practices, doctor’s surgeries and specialist practices is a prerequisite for people’s safety.

Regular cleaning activities, the use of sterile material and disinfected instruments for each patient (as required by the relevant regulations) are essential, but they are not enough to avoid all the risks we have already seen.

Disinfecting and decontaminating healthcare facilities allows:

How we disinfect your healthcare facilities

Disinfection must be carried out in all the following sanitary areas:

The disinfection treatment must be carried out on:

How do we do this activity?

Ozone (O) and hydrogen peroxide stabilized (H2O) are the disinfectant solutions that we at GEA recommend for disinfecting and decontaminating your medical environment.

Both these substances are recognised by the Ministry of Health and require the use of certified professional machinery. Thanks to the use of certified devices with specific technical data, these products perform their biocidal action without damaging the surrounding environment and are safe for the people entering the rooms after the treatment.

How does it work?

Our environmental technician carries out the disinfecting treatment with the product that is best suited to your needs. In order to guarantee the effectiveness of the activity, the areas must be cleaned before the arrival of the operator.

If the solution you have chosen is the one that exploits the oxidising power of ozone, our technician transports the ozone generator inside the room, sets the operating time (according to the size of the room), puts it into action and waits till the end of the operation.

If hydrogen peroxide stabilized is used, thanks to the special equipment (H2O2  atomizer or sprayer), the substance is nebulised inside the ducts of the A.T.U. (Air Treatment Unit) and/or in the rooms.

Both before and after the disinfecting treatment, our specialist takes microbiological samples from the surfaces which are then analysed through professional instruments or by a laboratory credited in microbiological analysis.

Those microbiological analysis results will therefore be reported in our technical report about to the intervention.
