Hypochlorous acid disinfection

Hypochlorous acid is obtained thanks to a disproportion reaction (electrolysis reaction) that takes place by dissolving chlorine (Cl) in water (H2O): it therefore exists only in aqueous solutions. Its chemical formula is HClO (or also HOCl).

In relation to pH, chlorine is found in three different forms: chlorine gas (pH less than 3), hypochlorous acid (between pH 3 and pH 7.5) and hypochlorite (above pH 7.5).

In biology, hypochlorous acid is also present within the immune system of our body, which works thanks to the activity of leukocytes (neutrophils, macrophages) that have the task of defending our body from foreign cells, which are phagocytized by leukocytes and, within them, destroyed thanks to the action of hypochlorous acid produced during the so-called “oxidative explosion” by the enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) from hydrogen peroxide and chloride ions.

Hypochlorous acid finds several fields of application: in the cosmetic industry hypochlorous acid is used as a skin cleaning agent and in some products for children’s skin.
Thanks to its oxidizing properties, hypochlorous acid is an excellent weapon against bacteria and is used in its solid form (hypochlorite) as an active disinfectant for water treatment, such as swimming pools or drinking water and for the elimination of microorganisms in water networks.
It is also sprayed or atomized for the environmental disinfection and decontamination of air and surfaces.
It is also widely used in the food industry for the treatment of food and containers and for the protection of fruit and vegetable production (pre-harvest), not to mention in the zootechnical sector to reduce livestock infections on farms.

HYPOCHLOROUS ACID CREDITS

Hypochlorous acid is approved by the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) as an antimicrobial agent in the production and preparation of meat (whole or cut) and poultry; processed, comminute and preformed meat and poultry; fish and seafood; fruits and vegetables and nuts.

In addition, it is recognized as a biocidal substance by BAuA (Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) in Germany and the Ministry of Health in Slovenia for: Human hygiene; Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals; Veterinary hygiene; Food and feeds sector; Drinking water.

The EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) also approves hypochlorous acid up to 200 ppm as a disinfection solution for surfaces in contact with food in public catering establishments, milk processing equipment and food processing equipment and utensils.

Active chlorine released from hypochlorous acid (i.e. hypochlorous acid used in atomization or sprayed for disinfection of air and surfaces in an environment) has been approved by ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) as a biocidal substance.

THE DISINFECTION ACTION OF HClO

The biocidal action of Active chlorine released from hypochlorous acid is due to its high ORP (Oxidation/Reduction Potential).
The molecule of hypochlorous acid (HClO), compared to other types of chlorine, has a neutral electric charge and a relatively low molecular weight. Thanks to these characteristics, the molecule is not repelled by bacteria (which have a negative electrical charge) and can thus more easily penetrate their cell membrane.

Thanks to its high oxidizing power it can alter the protein structure of the bacterium (in fact it causes its denaturation), which is destroyed in this way.

Once the disinfectant action is over, hypochlorous acid leaves no chemical residues in the environment.

The liquid and the machinery we use to perform the disinfection with hypochlorous acid are scientifically tested and certified.

HOW DISINFECTION WITH HYPOCHLOROUS ACID WORKS

The disinfection with the hypochlorous acid solution we propose can be performed in two different ways:

1. Surface treatment by nebulization;
2. Air and surface treatment by atomization (fumigation or misting).

The treatment carried out by nebulization can be done without the aid of specific machinery. It is suitable for disinfecting hard and non-porous surfaces such as, for example, worktops, furniture, floors and objects.

In this case the solution based on hypochlorous acid that we propose can be used pure or diluted in demineralized or osmotic water, just nebulize it on the surfaces, wait for 1 minute to let the product act and finally remove the excess product with a clean cloth (if any). After applying it, it is not necessary to rinse the treated surfaces.

The treatment of air and surfaces of the environment by fumigation can only be carried out if you have a specific machine such as, for example, a foggers, humidifiers or sprayers .
In this case the product can be used pure or diluted. Once the hypochlorous acid has been sprayed or atomized inside the closed and empty environment, let the dry mist produced remain inside it for at least 15 minutes.

The concentration of active chlorine released by hypochlorous acid in this product (≤ 0.05%), causes the active chlorine to degrade very quickly in the environment in the presence of light and/or organic substances, leaving no chemical residues in the environment.

To maximize the effectiveness of the treatment, we always recommend mechanical cleaning of the surfaces before disinfecting.
